An independent producer, writer, and director, Laila Abbas graduated with a degree in digital filmmaking from the SAE Institute in Jordan, and made her first short fiction film, Visa, in 2011. She was awarded a Said Foundation scholarship, and obtained a Master’s degree in film and television producing from Royal Holloway University. In 2014, she directed and produced the documentary Ice & Dust, which was nominated for the best documentary award at the Malmö Arab Film Festival. Her latest short film, Madam El (2016), was nominated for several awards, and screened in several festivals internationally. Abbas is now developing The Year of Ashes, her first feature-length film; and Lowest Place on Earth, a new short work.
