Sepideh Farsi

Born in Tehran and based in Paris since 1984, Sepideh Farsi has created a body of work that is both remarkably consistent in its deeply humane political engagement and singularly eclectic in the modes of expression it adopts, encompassing documentary (2009’s Tehran Without Permission, shot clandestinely on a Nokia camera phone), scripted narrative drama (2014’s Red Rose, a romance set against the backdrop of the Green Movement protests), and now animation (2022’s The Siren, which depicts the 1980 outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy in Abadan).

PFI mourns and denounces the targeted murder of 25-year-old Fatima Hassouna in April 2025 —martyred just 24 hours after a film about her was accepted into the ACID section at Cannes. Her murder was not isolated — she is one of over 230 journalists, photographers and filmmakers that have been targeted and murdered by the Israeli army in Gaza since October 2023. With foreign press blocked from entry, it has been incumbent on a brave, resourceful, and often young generation of reporters to cover the violence while simultaneously being its primary targets.
