Filmed over several years, the film offers intimate access to the personal and political lives of activists living under constant threat. They are watched, arrested, and now criminalised under anti-terror legislation, a moment that becomes a window into deeper questions around justice, legality, and the erosion of historically protected rights.

Ashtar Muallem is a Jerusalemite multidisciplinary artist blending circus, dance, and theatre. A professional performer for the past 16 years and graduate of the National Center of Circus Arts in France. Ashtar shifted to filmmaking in 2020. Her debut film, Land of Denied Rituals, was supported by AFAC in 2025. A 2025 SawaSawa laureate and Meditalent LabDoc resident, today she is mentored by Rithy Panh through the Doha Film Institute, developing her first feature documentary, Condemned to Dream.

Jiries Copti is the co-founder of Twenty Seven Films, a creative hub dedicated to amplifying Palestinian narratives and fostering transnational cinematic collaboration. With an academic background in Organizational Behavior and over a decade of experience in the film industry, he has built a diverse portfolio of more than 30 projects spanning feature films, documentaries, short films, and television series. Working as a producer and line producer, Jiries has collaborated with some of the most distinctive and emerging voices in contemporary Arab and European cinema. His practice bridges creative development and production strategy, with a strong focus on cross-border collaboration and storytelling rooted in social and political contexts. His projects have received international recognition and have screened at major film festivals including Venice, Berlin, Locarno, Toronto, Karlovy Vary, and Marrakech, among others. Through his work, Jiries continues to support bold cinematic voices and contribute to a dynamic, globally connected film landscape.

The Last Mayor of Jerusalem

The Last Mayor of Jerusalem is a character-driven story told from the perspective of Rawhi Khatib, the last serving Palestinian mayor in Jerusalem. The story unfolds over 20 years between the two Arab-Israeli wars. Following the Nakba (1948) which segregated Jerusalem into East and West, Rawhi’s determination helped a proud people rebuild from the ruins of destruction, displacement and death. But then came the Naksa (1967), and the city’s fate hung in the balance again

Kinda Kurdi is an award-winning filmmaker and TV producer with 16 years experience creating documentary and animation across multi-platforms. Her work has aired on various channels including broadcast credits spanning the BBC, Cartoon Network, Channel 4 news, Ro’ya & KTV. Kinda’s latest documentary is currently airing on Channel 4 ‘Guns, Gangs and Second Chances’. Her previous documentary short “As Above So Below” garnered her an award for Best Documentary short at the EIFF Festival and shortlisted amongst festivals in London, Venice and the United States.

Janay Bolous is a Lebanese filmmaker and documentary producer based between Lebanon and London. She has extensive experience across news, broadcast, digital, and field production. Her first feature documentary Birds of War premiered at Sundance 2026 where it won a Special Jury Award as part of the World Cinema Documentary Competition. She is producing several documentaries for international outlets, including Al Jazeera and The New York Times, as well as her second feature documentary, Until the Buzzing Stops.

Synopsis:
A Palestinian filmmaker stages an unlikely audition, which sets her actors to dramatic confrontations with a symbolic Israeli war criminal. The confrontations open questions about the heavy psychological burden of witnessing a genocide and the impossibility of justice. Eager to learn from other survivors around the world, the filmmaker embarks on a journey to Rwanda to learn how she can re-stage a similar confrontation using the wisdom of genocide survivors that have had enough time to process their anger.
